Online petition Cay Bay and Cole Bay against developmentPOSTED: 11/19/12 12:55 PM
CAY BAY, St. Maarten – A group of concerned Cole Bay and Cay Bay Residents have launched a petition against the filling in of the Simpson Bay Lagoon, the construction of sewage treatment plants behind Tropicana Casino and in the village of Cay Bay, the plans for an access road from Billy Folly to Cay Bay and the filling in of the bay in Cay Bay for a “Wind Farm” or other industrial purposes.
The residents refer to possible flooding of Cole Bay due to the filling in of the lagoon and property devaluation due to the construction of a sewage treatment plant. They also mentioned in a press release that businesses pump water straight into the lagoon, that businesses in Cay Bay are destroying burial sites, and that an illegal road has been built through the graveyard in Cay Bay.
Residents furthermore suggest the installation of wave generators in the bay, “instead of causing ecological and cultural destruction.”
Cole Bay and Cay Bay are two of the largest districts on the island yet they face some of the most alarming environmental and health challenges, the petition initiators say.
