Fire prevention month October focuses on smoke detectors

POSTED: 09/28/15 7:07 PM

St. Maarten (DCOMM) – The Fire Department organizes Fire Prevention Month during the whole month of October.

This year’s theme is: ‘Smoke detectors save lives.’

The Fire Department is doing this in collaboration with the Friends of the Island Government Fire Fighters.

The activities during the month include a fire safety awareness workshop for all primary school third graders and the installation of smoke detectors in houses.  The firefighters will visit a different district every week.

There is a lecture and workshop for architects and engineers on fire safety on October 21.

An open house and fire safety expo is scheduled for November 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a walkthrough at the fire station, and demonstrations of firefighting skills.  Fire safety providers will be able to exhibit their products and services at the expo.

Readers who are interested in sponsoring smoke detectors, who want to obtain a booth at the open house, or who have any questions should contact Antonio Gibs via email at  or call the fire department at 543 13 16 or 543 13 18.
