Two Dutch MPs keep hammering on their solution for the constitutional prison they experience the Kingdom to be: a Commonwealth.
Never mind that the islands do not feel anything for such a construction. According to Van Raak political parties in the islands are thinking about this but he does not fool us. There is not a single party in St. Maarten favoring a commonwealth structure. With that, the debate is dead before it even started.
Minister Plasterk is aware of this, but Van Raak keeps riding this hobby horse as his unique solution to all trouble. It would for sure serve the Dutch, because a commonwealth would relieve the Netherlands from its post-colonial obligations to the islands.
The UN charter gives the islands the right to self-determination. That is something the Dutch don’t have – and there are very good historical reasons for it.
