“For bottomless sunbathing, stick to Orient Beach”
St. Maarten – With the state of the Industry conference coming up in just a couple of weeks, the French side tourist Bureau is stepping up its efforts to highlight St. Maarten and Saint Martin in the media. Yesterday we received a press release noting that the web site About.com places “St. Martin in the top of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. In the “top beaches of the Caribbean” Orient Beach ranked as the number 16, the press release stated.
Checking this information at the About.com web site showed that Orient Beach is, of course, ranked among the best “topless and nude beaches” in the Caribbean.
The Tourist Bureau prefers to refer to Orient Beach as a naturist beach: “With its heavenly setting, its large size, its significant reputation of being the St. Tropez of the Caribbean the many activities that are available (hotels, restaurants, shops, water sports) and its naturist beach located at the extreme end make Orient Bay one of the best places to hang out in the entire Caribbean,” the press release states.
The French Tourist Bureau also refers to Cupecoy Beach as the only “clothing optional” beach on the Dutch side, and as “one of the best spots to admire the sunset.”
The press release does not mention the fact that our beaches are currently practically unusable due to the massive arrival of sargassum on our shores.
Robert Curley wrote this about Orient Beach on the About.com web site: “The Dutch Caribbean countries have a very relaxed attitude toward topless sunbathing, so you can feel comfortable giving the “girls” some sun whether you are on the French or Dutch side of St. Martin/St. Maarten. For bottomless sunbathing, however, stick to Orient Beach on the French side, where it’s not uncommon for entire families to be enjoying the sun and surf in the buff.”
