MP Silvio Matser and the UP-leadership had it coming: a call from the opposition National Alliance for the convicted MP to vacate his seat in Parliament.
Since integrity is so high on everybody’s agenda this year, it is impossible to shove the opposition’s plea aside as politicking, simply because this is a just demand.
Parliament is already in the crosshairs of integrity-researchers and a continued stay in his seat may be good for Matser’s pocket but it will do the parliament, and with it the country, a huge disservice.
The same goes for his potential successor Maria Buncamper-Molanus, whose history indicates that she’d rather make peace with this newspaper than forego a seat in Parliament.
Integrity is on the line in these cases and it is time for political leaders to show their colors. Opportunities to show that you mean business do not come by every day.
