Christian council: Put the Christ back in Christmas

St. Maarten —With the Christmas season practically here, the Christian Council urges the populace to put the Christ back in Christmas.

“With the preparation, anticipation and expectation in the Season of Advent, we can then fully, and spiritually celebrate the beauty and joy of Christmas.  If we only see “Christmas” lights, and are not reminded of Christ as the light of the world…or see beautifully wrapped gifts, and are yet not grateful for or fail to use the gifts God has given us…if we hear Christmas music, and yet, do not “sing a new song” unto the Lord, or eat and drink at Christmas parties or dinners and yet fail to recognize the Heavenly banquet, or feed the hungry and give drink to the thirsty…we miss out on the “transforming moments” that the Christmas message calls us to,” the Christian Council said in their Christmas message.

“In our Christian community Christmas Day is just the beginning of the Christmas Season.  To truly have a wonderful and blessed Christmas, we must also, therefore, also have a wonderful and blessed Advent.  For our spiritual lives to be truly “Christmas” healthy in the Christian community, preparation with anticipation and expectation leads to true celebration,” the Christian council states. The Christian council notes that Christmas decorations have already gone up in some stores and businesses and that Christmas carols are already being played, however they ask the nation “in seeing this great light we as the Christian community of St. Maarten/St. Martin are to prepare in each of our own hearts for this “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Prince. But, we must be vigilant, careful and patient.”

The council call on the populace, and in particular the local Christian community to  let this Advent and Christmas time be about learning how to “transition” between preparing, anticipating and expecting to truly celebrating.  “As we look to our community here in St. Maarten/St.Martin, let us continue to find hope and understand God’s presence amongst us as we pray that our leaders will be focused on serving our people with the values of God’s Kingdom as their foundations, and that any of our people who have experienced violence, or “bullying” or feel a “lack of belonging” will truly encounter the light that has dawned.”

The Christian Council opined that often the world celebrates Christmas for two months, and the day after the Christmas, the tree and all other decorations begin to come down, but added that “by reflection and prayer, by reading and meditation, we can make our hearts a place where a blessing of peace would desire to abide and where the birth of the Prince of Peace might take place.” The Council extends “a very blessed and grace-filled Advent and Christmas Season to all of you, your families, and all of God’s People.”
