GREAT BAY— Port St. Maarten management has commended the St. Maarten Customs Department and other relevant law enforcement agencies involved in the successful seizure of narcotics that arrived on a vessel on Sunday from Jamaica.

1,000 Kilos of marijuana with an estimated street value of $1 million dollars was confiscated by local Customs officials after it arrived at the port in a container from Jamaica. Customs and police officials were on site shortly after the drugs had been discovered and cordoned off the area while they conducted their investigations.  The drugs had been packaged in bags and discovered by the officers while performing a routine check of containers that enter the harbor. Anthony Doran, Head of Customs, said that in a press release following the discovery that the bags of drugs were visible as soon as the container was opened.

“The interdiction at Port St. Maarten sends a strong message to criminals that the country’s law enforcement agencies are on alert to seize and arrest any criminals attempting to use the country’s gateways for any illegal activities. Port St. Maarten has invested in a structure to house the agencies at our cargo facility to facilitate their hands-on approach which can be labeled as successful. We at Port St. Maarten will not tolerate any illegal activities.  We commend Customs for their alertness and other law enforcement agencies that played a role in this seizure effort,” Chief Executive Officer of the port Mark Mingo said on Tuesday.
