Lower punishment for ill-treating girlfriendPOSTED: 10/27/14 4:49 PM
St. Maarten – The Common Court of Justice sentenced Randall Sobacion Atlan on Wednesday to a 6-week conditional prison sentence for threatening the life of his girlfriend with a machete on February 8 of this year. The punishment is slightly lower than the 2-month conditional sentence the Court in First Instance imposed on June 4, because the Appeals Court found no proof that the 33-year-old defendant actually injured his girlfriend with the machete. He did however hit her several times against her head and in her face.
The ill-treatment happened in the bedroom of the couple’s home in the presence of the victim’s two daughters. Atlan confessed that he had gone to the back porch to grab a machete because he wanted to scare his girlfriend.
The court noted in its ruling that the girlfriend had feared for her life and that she had fled the house. The defendant had no criminal record and he successfully completed anger management training.
