Death baby-boy was accidentPOSTED: 10/20/14 6:43 PM
St. Maarten – The 11-month old boy who lost his life in a bizarre accident at home last week Monday did not die as the result of a crime, the Public Prosecutor’s Office stated in a press release yesterday. The investigation into the circumstances “did not produce a single indication of a criminal act,” the press release states.
The prosecutor’s office assumes that the child slipped of the bed he was lying on, that he crawled to a ledge next to the toilet, climbed onto that ledge, stood up and then fell into the toilet. “The situation in the house is such that an accident like this could happen,” the prosecutor’s office states.
The baby-boy was on his way to the Dominican Republic for medical treatment last week Tuesday when he passed away.
Because the cause of death raised questions, the police conducted an investigation (dubbed Tulip) at the orders of the prosecutor’s office. Officers interviewed people involved and witnesses and conducted a forensic investigation. This included an examination of the body and of the place where the accident took place. Officers also meticulously measured and photographed the situation in the house.
The investigators found no indications for a crime. “There are no indications that the child was not well taken care off and there was no question of abuse or neglect by the one who cared for the child,” the press release states.
The parents have been informed about the conclusions of the investigation. The prosecutor’s office has released the body to the family for the funeral.
