St. Maarten (DCOMM) – During the 22nd plenary meeting of the Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence units in Lima, Peru, St. Maarten’s FIU was accepted as a member on Wednesday. FIU-director Ligia Stella was present at this meeting.

This Egmont Group consists of 147 FIUs all over the world. The FIU receives and analyses unusual transactions and in the case a suspicion of money laundering or terrorist financing arises, it sends a suspicious transactions report to the public prosecutor’s office.

The Egmont Group of FIUs offers training and technical assistance opportunities for the FIU to strengthen its capabilities. It also serves as a platform for the exchange of information between the FIUs.
