St. Maarten/Dawn Beach - Minister of Tourism and Economic Affairs Ted Richardson has applauded the keynote speaker Dr. Robertico Croes for his inspiring address on “exploring smart tourism pathways” during the 35th Anniversary celebrations of the St. Maarten Chamber of Commerce and Industry which was held at the Westin Dawn Beach Resort and Spa on Wednesday evening.  During his presentation he spoke of the growing gap between the high and low season and called on tourism representatives to do something about it because in small island states it could have serious consequences in the future.

He pointed out that from the research he has done it clearly shows that if government does not focus on the challenges in the tourism sector and increased prices there will be difficulties and called on hotels to improve their properties and service to their customers. He explained that tourists are also sensitive to weather and mentioned that this should be taken into consideration when advertising.

He also spoke of the need to concentrate on the niche markets since it is better to ensure that the product is excellent instead of looking at diversifying it while remaining mediocre. Croes is said to be an expert in tourism and has been called by many Caribbean and Latin American countries for consultancy because of his extensive research and experience in destination tourism management, marketing, and investment in tourism related infrastructure.

He also has significant expertise in operational management, assessment in vulnerabilities, and risks at national and international levels.
