St. Maarten – A suspect in the 2012 armed robbery of L’Escargot owner has been arrested by the Special Robbery Unit, police reported, after a prolonged investigation. The 26 year old man with initials F.L. has been incarcerated for further investigation. On October 26, 2012, L’Escargot restaurant-owner Joel Morand was shot in his shoulder during an armed robbery that took place around 11.30 pm in the alley next to the eatery, near Anand Indian restaurant.
Morand and his wife Sonya and two of their friends were in one car when they were accosted by three armed robbers in the Hotel Steeg – commonly known as the L’Escargot Alley.
The victims were robbed of their personal belongings. In an attempt to steal the car, the robbers dragged the female driver out of it, but they did not manage to take the car.
At some point a shot was fired and the bullet hit Morand in one of his shoulders. He was taken to the St. Maarten Medical Center for treatment.
The Morand-family is a fixture in St. Maarten’s restaurant business. Morand opened his business more than forty years ago, in January 1972.
