The police have apprehended a suspect in the case of the stolen motorbike and the brave security guard who risked his life defending someone else’s property. The suspect is, to be sure, innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. But we do hope this case can be put to rest.

Both the security guard and the police should be commended for their efforts; the police in this case were tireless in trying to resolve it and bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous act.

St. Maarten is in its infant stages of development as a self-governing nation, and a beginning is always a delicate time. The little island is beset by grave challenges both from within and from without.

As we have written here before, there can be no prosperity without security. If St. Maarten is to thrive both economically and culturally, its people and their property must be kept safe.
