St. Maarten – The twenty marines of the new marine detachment Pointe Blanche landed yesterday in St. Maarten. Not by boat, but by plane. During the past six months, 6 colleagues have been preparing their arrival. The marines have a post at the Pointe Blanche cargo facility.
Two weeks ago, Minister of Defense Janine Plasschaert visited the harbor. On that occasion she said that the arrival of the marines from the Netherlands completes the birth of a new facility of her ministry in the Caribbean. “This detachment will guarantee the safety in this part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands,” she said.
The marines will work and train on St. Maarten, Saba and Statia. During the next couple of weeks they will familiarize themselves with the island. They will tour the territory with members of the police force and with members of the fire department.
