Today is World Radio Day according to UNICEF, and its theme is Women in Radio. Minister of Culture Patricia Lourens-Philip rightly pointed to the female radio celebrities on the island, asking us to celebrate women in broadcast media. It’s often easy to forget in this part of the world the huge strides and gains women (and girls) have made in society. It’s easy to take for granted the prominence many now hold in society.

After all, regardless of your politics, it should make us all proud that we have a woman at the head of government. And our President of Parliament is also a woman. It says something about us. St. Maarten is far more progressive than we sometimes believe. The United States of America, that bastion of human rights and democracy, has yet to have a woman sit in the Oval Office.

Work, of course, still remains to be done. Cultural barriers and stigmas against women still exist, especially in the macho Caribbean. But St. Maarten should be proud of its women, and itself.
