Editorial: Urgent appealPOSTED: 12/11/13 6:53 PM
When politicians remain silent, the intelligentsia has to step up to the plate. That is exactly what our local poet and author Lasana Sekou did with his urgent appeal on the prime ministers on both sides of the island to denounce a measure taken in the Dominican Republic’s Constitutional Court that will – according to Sekou - strip a quarter of a million of people of their citizenship.
Sekou’s call is of course a just one that deserves support. But which politician in St. Maarten is going to stand up and do what is right? Which prime minister is interested enough in the fate of people who do not even live here?
This is an interesting – and at the same time harrowing – question. If prime ministers and politicians turn their backs on the plight of so many people in the region – as they have done since the racist ruling came down in the Dominican Republic three months ago – they have very little to be proud of.
We stand with Lasana Sekou on this issue and challenge with him the two prime ministers to announce their colors.
