SXM Girls Night Out: Sheconomy event in Maho on SaturdayPOSTED: 07/30/13 11:04 AM
St. Maarten – “Women are about 80% of the income decision makers in households in the Caribbean,” Ogechi Anyanwu said yesterday. She is an event organizer and founder of SXM Girls Night Out. With such a powerful presence in the economy as consumers, she dubs it the Sheconomy.
The event on Saturday at the Maho Sonesta resort will be “a fun night out,” Anyanwu said. She encouraged St. Maarten’s ladies to “go out with their girlfriends, shop, network, sip on cocktails, and be pampered.”
The idea behind SXM Girls Night Out is a place where businesses that cater to female tastes can gather with their products and services and let a large group of women sample or purchase their goods. For example, representatives from jewelry and fashion stores, restaurants, and spas will be located in one venue getting greater exposure to potential female local consumers.
“Business people can increase their local client base with people that you cherish,” Anyanwu said. Her older sister, Ijeoma Anyanwu, also an event planner with the group, said the theme is for ladies to “shop, sip, savor, and be pampered.” She said “shopping can be typically stressful for most women,” who often have to mind children and balance hectic schedules. “We want to make it therapeutic.”
The elder Anyanwu continued by saying that “sponsors will be coming up with signature cocktails, and fine restaurants will be providing samples of their signature dishes.” While there are currently getting support from local business and sponsors, “we’d love more,” her sister Ogechi chimed in.
“What we are bringing is a group of quality women to quality businesses and having fun doing it, and giving back to the community,” the elder sister continued.
The ladies organizing the event made it clear that the large Saturday-event will be once for the year, but they will be hosting smaller events at partner locations more often.
Cousin Linda Cocks, also an event planner, pointed out that there will be “the hottest red heel competition” at the Maho event. The best and hottest pair of red heels for the evening will win a special prize. The elder Ayanwu highlighted that there will be “giftbags with goodies from generous sponsors for the first 500 women” called “swag bags” with “Hollywood grade” goodies. “We have wonderful vendors in all areas,” she continued.
The event at the Maho Sonesta Resort runs on Saturday from 5 p.m. until 12 p.m. After that the boys can join the girls for the after-party.
