St. Maarten – The artwork of two local students was chosen to represent St. Maarten at the 2013 Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) Children’s Environmental Poster Competition.
Sidney De Weever (9 years) of the Methodist Agogic Centre – Browlia Maillard Campus in the junior category and Isaiah Haakmat (16 years) of the Learning Unlimited preparatory School in the senior category are St. Maarten’s finalists. There were thirty entries from various schools and they were judged by local artist, Ruby Bute.
The FCCA Children’s Environmental Poster Competition is an annual event coordinated by the St. Maarten Tourist Bureau in collaboration with the FCCA. Students of the primary and secondary schools were invited to participate in the poster competition.
The posters must depict at the least three ways in which the destination can make a difference in preserving the environment along with the title of each poster.
De Weever’s and Haakmat’s posters were forwarded to the FCCA Selection Committee for further judging to determine the overall winner amongst the FCCA member countries.
There are three cash scholarship prizes for each category: $3,000 for the winners, $,1500 for the runners-up and $1,000 for the numbers three. The winning schools will receive matching cash amounts.
Last year Emilie van der Waals of Learning Unlimited Preparatory School placed third in the senior category.
