MAHO BAY, St. Maarten – The Tourism authorities and hoteliers who attended the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association Conference were advised to focus on the mid-week travel instead of weekend travel, said Maho Beach Resort sales manager Bernard Hunt.

“This was interesting,” said Hunt since there has always been weekend travel, where visitors come from one weekend to the next. They were advised to entice visitors to come during the week by putting together packages for this period. He noted that St. Maarten has the best airlift to the island and that the hotels should take advantage of this.

In the Caribbean region most hoteliers are upgrading their property and conducting training for their staff to ensure that the tourist that comes to their property returns. “The only way to achieve this is by giving visitors excellent service,”  Hunt said. “One of the most import things in the industry is how to give the best of service to their clients. Service is key since that brings you returning guests.”

Only a few hoteliers from the island and representatives of the Tourism Office attended the Caribbean Marketplace meeting in the Bahamas last week. Hunt said that it is necessary for hoteliers to upgrade their properties “to keep the ball rolling” and to attract more guests to the island.
