Home of the late Charlie Jacobs to be demolishedPOSTED: 01/29/13 12:51 PM
St. Maarten – Minister of Culture Silveria Jacobs has confirmed that the house which belonged to the late Charles Jacobs in Cole Bay will be demolished with plans for a junior basketball court and small meeting hall to replace it.
The minister told Parliamentarians during a Central Committee meeting last Friday that the site on which the house sits was formerly the property of the Central Government, now St. Maarten government, but the structure itself is not on the monument list.
Residents, via the Cole Bay Community Council had requested that it be turned into a sporting facility for young people and named in honor of Charles Jacobs. National Alliance Parliamentarian Louie Laveist, during a December 29 Central Committee meeting had raised the issue with the minister, regarding the ministry’s plans for the structure.
During the continuation of that meeting on Friday, the minister said that there have already been some preliminary talks with the Department of New Works however everything depends on the budget being passed.
“We do have a plan but we still have to demolish and the building of that facility would depend on the budget being passed. Much is hinging on the budget being passed so that we can qualify for loans so that we can get some of our programs off the ground. This would be one of them.”
The Public Works department will be demolishing the present structure.
“A canteen and a small tribune which can be used by both the school and the community,” are also expected to form part of the project, the minister added.
When Laveist raised a point of clarification on whether the new facilities will be named after Charles Jacobs, the minister confirmed that this was a possibility.
“I believe that the Council itself should be the ones to send in an official request pertaining to the naming of a facility that will be built. We are far from that but I would believe that the CCC would have that right to have the facility names after the late Charles Jacobs,” the minister said.
Charles Emanuel Jacobs better known as Charlie was a member of the Netherlands Antilles police Force for some 30 years. He was born on December 6, 1932 and died on November 26, 2012.
