St. Maarten – Shirnon August Benvenido T., a 41-year-old former employee of the ministry of public housing, urban planning, environment and infrastructure, has to stand trial in the Court in First Instance on September 5 on bribery charges.

According to the summons that is on public display in the courthouse, T. accepted a 600 guilders bribe from T. Lee and/or J. Liu. T. took the bribe in exchange for a promise to protect Lee and Liu against consequences that could follow shortcomings inspectors had found in their companies.

It is unclear whether T., who is from Curacao, will attend the court hearing. The prosecutor’s office publishes summonses in the courthouse when it proves impossible to serve them to defendants in person.
