Less than half of all St. Maarten school buses inspectedPOSTED: 08/6/12 12:19 PM
St. Maarten (DCOMM) – School Busing and Taxi Dispatching Inspection Department of Economic Affairs Head Martha Thewet says less than 50 per cent of school busses were inspected last week.
Thewet says the driver’s had ample time to contact the department to make arrangements for inspections. “School busses that are not inspected will not be allowed to transport school children on behalf of the government on August 13, the start of the new school year
“They will be in violation of the law, and they won’t be paid either. They will be in violation of the no-show fail policy. Anyone who doesn’t show up for inspection will automatically fail the inspection, and every school bus owner and driver is aware of this,” Thewet said on Sunday.
The department has extended the inspection period starting today until Wednesday. The department urges bus owners and drivers to use this final opportunity or to face sanctions.
They have to call the department to make an appointment. Inspections will take place between 8.30 a.m. – 12.00 p.m. and 1.30 p.m. – 3.00 p.m.
Thewet added that the department will not compromise the safety of the school children and that of other road users.
The inspection section’s phone numbers are 542 45 11 or 542 45 09.
