Su Wathey signs petition against cock fighting

St. Maarten – Yesterday afternoon the number of signatures on the online anti cock fighting petition stood at 3,999, so it is expected that initiator Elaine Christopher will present her second batch of signatures to Governor drs Eugène Holiday this week.
The petition recently received the support from the President of the St. Maarten Animal Welfare Foundation Su Wathey, who signed on as number 3, 987. Wathey’s name adds to the number of prominent locals that have spoken out against legalizing cock fighting by signing the petition. The first signature came in on June 8.
So far the governor has not signed the new criminal code. The parliament approved an exception to the code’s article 539 in May that would make organized cock fights legal. Article 539 prohibits cruelty against animals. The exception is a possible violation of article 22 of St. Maarten’s constitution and this could be a reason for the governor to withhold his signature. Otherwise the Ombudsman has the option to put the matter in front of the Constitutional Court within six weeks after the governor signs off on the legislation.
