GREAT BAY/THE NETHERLANDS – Former Miss St. Maarten Aishira Cicilia represents St. Maarten, Saba & St. Eustatius in the Rotterdam Zomer (Summer) Carnival Queen pageant that will be held on July 21. The main event of the queen’s election will be the carnival presentation, where each troupe’s queen will be expected to show off their costumes along with her dancers. The theme of the carnival group will be “Caribbean Mas”. The theme will be expressed through the member’s display of costumes, music and festive fun.
“I’m very honoured to be representing St. Maarten and her sister islands. No matter where I go, Carnival is and will always be a part of me, and it’s this message I hope to convey during my carnival presentation. Our troupe’s name is Small Island Unity and our theme for this year is ‘Caribbean Mas.’ All troupe members will display their country’s flag as an integral part of their costume. This is our way of expressing the unity that is inherent to carnival everywhere. It’s a great way for our islands to be promoted, at an event that is visited by over 900,000 people. We’re going to be making history with this troupe!”
A large part of the judging for the queen election relies on online voting. Cicilia is asking the public to visit www.kiesjequeen.nl and vote for ‘Aishira Cicilia’ at the bottom of the page.
“You can only vote once per IP address, so be sure to vote from your PCs, laptops, iPads, mobile phones, everything and help me make history and put us all on the map,” Cicilia urged.
Born and raised on ‘Sunshine City’ St. Maarten Cicilia is no stranger to carnival. Her grandmother, Felicia Priest, was St. Maarten’s flag lady and led the carnival parade for over 20 years!
“Carnival is in my blood; many of my family members were and still are involved in carnival for many years!”
Cicilia has participated in the carnival scene faithfully every year, even whilst living on Bonaire for four years. In 2003 she made the transition from taking part in a troupe to leading the parade herself by capturing the Teen Carnival queen show title. She also captured the titles of Miss Antillean Queen 2003, Senior Carnival Queen 2004 and Miss Sunset 2010.Cicilia is currently completing her studies as an aspiring lawyer and is looking forward to representing the islands of St. Maarten, St. Eustatious and Saba in the Rotterdam ZomerCarnaval Queen Election.
