Sports: St. Martin/St. Maarten to compete as one

St. Maarten – Some of the seasoned athletes from both sides of the island will be facing a stern test when the Speedy Plus club stages its first international track & field events at the Alberic Richards stadium in Sandy Ground from May 5 to May 9. The organizers were able to get Loren Seagrave – a professional conditioning coach – to conduct the sprint and hurdles clinic on May 6 and 7 in an attempt to develop the skills of the local athletes. The showdown among the participating countries will take place on May 5.
According to Calvin Bryan, the founder of Speedy Plus club, the French and Dutch will be joining forces for this international event when they compete against the field of international athletes.
The United States of America (U.S.A), Canada, Italy, Cuba, France, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, French Guyana, the Bahamas, Antigua, St. Barths, Anguilla, Martinique Guadeloupe, St Kitts & Nevis, Ukraine, St Martin/St Maarten are among the participating countries in the ‘Plan Caraibe’ meet which is scheduled for May 5. St. Martin/St. Maarten will be competing as one island.
Bryan, the master mind behind this event, is a legend in this field. He is a former professional sports instructor. In 1966, Bryan was named the best track and field coach in France. Bryan was the official trainer for almost all of the athletes in Guadeloupe that went to the world championships and Olympics from 1966 – 2002.
He received a gold medal from the French ministry of sports and a gold medal from the French Track and Field Federation. Bryan brought home two gold medal champions within three years of training when eight years was the predications. This consists of coaches, trainers, participants and a host of caliber.
This event will give the island additional international exposure and the community is invited to schedule the dates and come out and support as St. Martin/St. Maarten showcases its finest athletes.
