Letter: I want to follow the law!

POSTED: 12/2/11 8:34 AM

Dear Editor,

What does a person have to do abide by the laws? My driver’s license has expired. I want to renew it. I can’t. They, meaning our government, are not renewing driver’s licenses. They have not been doing so for a couple of months. No one seems to know why or when they will start.

What? That means I have to drive around with an expired license? Apparently! I have never done that in my life and I resent having to do it now. What if I was traveling soon, and I needed to rent a car? I have no valid license. I understand the police are still giving fines too. So what? I should stay home and off the road so I don’t get a fine?

This is Catch-22 as I, and other motorists, caught between two impossible situations. I would like someone to explain to me why our own government is forcing us to drive illegally. I have never heard of such a ridiculous thing!

I also heard that the St. Maarten license is not being recognized on the French side. This is a ridiculous state of affairs also. If it’s true I would like some clarity on this.

But most of all, I just want to have a legal driver’s license, and I can’t! I am a very unhappy camper right now. Someone needs to fix this now!

Regards,

Barbara Cannegieter
