Editorial: Three hot topics (legalization of abortion, euthanasia and prostitutionPOSTED: 08/26/11 12:24 PM
Parliament will soon have three hot topics on its hands: the legalization of abortion, the legalization of euthanasia, and the legalization of prostitution.
Moral crusaders will be up and about, but the truth is of course that our Parliament has only two options when it comes to a vote: being realistic or being hypocritical.
The reality is that abortions are performed on the island. We hear stories about abortions performed on the Dutch side (where it is actually illegal), and about abortions on the French side (where it is permitted under conditions).
Prostitution is another no-brainer: the profession has been around forever, and legalizing is the only way to give the government a grip on business practices in the world of working girls.
St. Maarten would join the ranks of advanced thinking countries if it legalized all three practices. Two of them, abortion and euthanasia, have to do with people’s right to make their own choices. Women ought to have the legal right to decide about their own body. People who suffer from an incurable disease without any perspective on recovery, ought to have the legal right to end their life in a humane manner.
That sounds simple, but what matters here is that these initiatives get the support from the community. If that support is lacking, legalization won’t happen. In that case, abortions, and euthanasia will occur in dark backrooms.
And prostitution? Well, this is one of those businesses that will never go bankrupt, legalized or not, so we may as well grab the bull by the horns and go for a system that gives the government some sort of control over our brothels and that offers the working girls some form of protection.
