St. Maarten’s Central Committee meeting finishes in record time

St. Maarten – The Central Committee of Parliament set a record yesterday afternoon by finishing a meeting in exactly seven minutes and thirty seconds. On the agenda was the amendment of the 1997 national ordinance on the turnover tax. There were three experts from the Finance Ministry present, not to answer questions, but to take down questions to which Finance Minister Hiro Shigemoto will later answer in writing.
However, the only parliamentarian who has a question was the National Alliance MP George Pantophlet. He asked the experts for “a synopsis of the proposed changes and their effects on the people.”
Parliament Chair Gracita Arrindell intervened after that question, pointing out that the experts were not there to give a presentation.
But the experts could easily handle Pantophlet’s question: “They are all technical amendments that have no economical impact,” one of them said.
None of the other MPs had any questions, and the meeting concluded in record time.
