Editorial: Relief in time of stress

The news that gas prices will fall on Friday is news that will no doubt make motorists happy, partially because it will free up some cash to do other things. That is no doubt welcome in a time when the wider economy is plagued by high cost of living and doing business.

Next to the high cost of living and doing business is the fact that the island is now entering the slower summer months when tourism arrival figures fall and workers in the island tourism sector get fewer hours of work and thus less income. Having less pressure on their pockets will no doubt help them, to some extent, continue to keep their heads above water.

Realistically however falling gasoline prices are only the tip of the iceberg of the relief that people here need and focus now needs to turn to how that relief is provided. The fact that some savings will be netted from adjustments to GEBE tariffs by August 1 provides a glimmer of hope that we are moving in the right direction.

As the orphan David Copperfield said though, with bowl in hand, “Please sir, may I have some more.”
