Fault in Pondfill line blamed for partial outage

St. Maarten – Parts of the island connected to the electricity feeder cable on the Pondfill Road lose power around 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. A fault between the Zagersgut Substation and the Pondfill was blamed for the outage.

In a post on Facebook the utility company said the outage affected both Zagersgut and Philipburg. The latter was evidenced by the lights in stores and buildings in the area flickering and then turning off.

Technicians began repair work almost immediately on locating the fault and repairing it. Their efforts led to a full restoration of power by 6:00 p.m. and the company. That quick turnaround was not enough to spare the company the wrath of consistent critic Jeff Berger.

He posted, “The gang that can’t shoot straight strikes again.”

The power shutdown also led to the early adjournment of a meeting of the permanent committee on Kingdom Affairs and Inter-parliamentary Relations as the new parliament building is not equipped with a generator.
