St. Maarten – The average cost of consumer goods, measured with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) dropped for the first time in nearly two years during August. New figures released Monday by the Department of Statistics show a 0.3 percent drop when compared with June.

The last quarterly drop in CPI was in December 2008 when it dropped 3.9 percentage points from 108.3 to 104.1.

Between June and August the figure went from 111.5 to 111.2. The comparison by year shows a continued rise in costs for basic consumer items on St. Maarten.
